The Use of the Maplson Type D in Febrile Pediatric Patients
Abstract
The Mapleson type D is one of the non-rebreathing systems used in pediatric general anesthesia. Because it doesn't have soda lime, the fresh gas flow (FGF) must be adjusted to the patient's size, body temperature and the anesthetic technique to
prevent
CO2 retention. We have used the FGF of 2-3.5 L/min according to patient's body weight, whether or not the patient has a fever. So we examined arterial blood gas analysis in 3 pediatric patients with fever. We suggest that I a patient has a fever,
it is
desirable to increase FGF to 5 L/min to prevent CO2 accumulation or acidosis.
